Wales June 2008

(Revisited III)

Some like it hair-raising!

After a strenuous ascent one is rewarded with phantastic views

and a relatively easy walk on a ridge - the Cat's Back.

The way down.

The ridge is just visible on the left.

Here the ascent was a lot more gradual - but very teasing.

Every time, one thought, one had made it,

there was another layer of hill looming ahead.

Entrance to one of the many book shops

 in Hay-on-Wye

where not only the books are a treat ...

... the roses are too.

A church, tucked away in remote and hilly farmland!

I see a heart in this pattern of bushes and trees.

These sheep seemed very determined to get from A to B -

 wherever B was.

View onto the reservoir.

One does not see it, but it was so windy up there

that we all had to lie down to be able to do this picture.

To the right of the pines where the paths cross our car is parked.

Blending into the landscape.

Blending into anything is usually one of Pandra's tougher excercises.

"Where is our lunch?

And what is that, you are holding in your hand?"

On our walks

digestives morphed into dog food.

One of nature's beautiful compositions ...

... and another one.

This as well is a treat for the eyes ...

... as is this.

The approach phase of our walk up Pen y Fen.

We intended to go up and then return

but ended up walking in a huge circle around the reservoir,

coming back along the mountain ridge in the background.

The weather was glorious ...

... the foxgloves were at their best ...

... and the wild ponies seemed to be very content.

This is it!

The serious walking starts here.

Between peaks.

To the left it goes up onto Pen y Fen.

The dark and white blob in the middleground is a group of four people

who actually had carried chairs and a table all the way up

to enjoy lunch in a civilised way.

A look back, having "done" Pen y Fan.

The reservoir seen from the short side.

It is not exactly crowded up here.

Round and round we go.

Three mounteneers

with Pen y Fan in the background.

Taking a "power break".

At 12 1/2 years of age, Lisa did our seven-hour walk in style.

Back down by the reservoir,

the flora is quite special.

It is easy to imagine the mountains might be valcanoes

and the pines might be palm trees.

After a strenuous walk, it is particularly nice

to come back to a comfortable hotel.

Gliffaes' living-rooms are lovely ...

...with fire places ...

... and comfortable sofas.

There is a "window seat" as well ...

... and a glass house.

One of the views from the terrace ...

... and the lovely garden ...

... forever a feast for the eyes.

View from the terrace onto the river

On our last walk ...

... to see  Llyn y Fan Fach, the lake in the mountains

of which we saw a captivating picture hanging in the hotel bar.

The view to the other side - downhill

 And then of course ...

... we had to see ...

... what the lake looked like from higher up.

The lake is at a level of 510 m ...

... the top of the mountains is 650 m high.

This is ...

 ... what one sees ...

... when looking ....

 ... over ...

... to the other side of the lake.

As always

our holiday was over too soon,

 and, as always,

we are looking forward

 to the next trip

 to Wales.
