Wales October 2007

(Revisited II)

Wales seems to be addictive.

This time we had the plan to walk up Pen-y-Fan,

the highest of the Brecon Beacons.

For the first couple of days we did some shorter walks,

partly to get into the stride of things.

Our walks turned out to be "hits" with very rewarding views.

Some ascents are quite steep.

Then there are the fairytale type sunken lanes, ...

... sloping meadows, ...

... romantic tree arches, ...

... hazy views, ...

 ... and happy, sunny ones.

When adding a bit more altitude ...

... the landscape gets browner, bigger and barer.

Everything seems colour co-ordinated ...

... in warm autumnal shades.

A variation on the theme

 - with the addition of a clear blue sky ...

... or alternatively a black dog.

To have the clouds below one ...

  ... or a valley ...

 ... at one's feet ...

... feels uplifting.

And if one chooses to look up,

 the colours can be stunning.

This is the mountain range that includes Pen-y-Fan.

Pen-y-Fan is the peak with the sharp edge to it.

 800 m high

and together with the other two peaks forming part of this tour

it kept us busy for 6 hours and 40 minutes.

 Luckily we had company.

Climbing steadily.

The view from the first peak.

Bare hills in the middleground, looking like sleeping dinosaurs.

This is the "We made it" picture.

We made it too - so here is one more.

It feels a bit like having a viev onto a different planet.

View from Pen-y-Fan in the opposite direction towards the sea,

which is just about visible in the background.

Some of the more frequented trails have been "paved" in small sections

to avoid  erosion and to keep the tracks walkable.

Descending further.

A totally unperturbed wild pony.

This is a seriously long way down!

For the ponies it is not a matter of up or down.

They are where there is grass

and  they move with the sun and the availabillity of shelter.

We still have the lakes in front of us.

On the bridge across a reservoir.

Back on terra firma - after the reservoir walk.

The view from the car park in Hay-on-Wye,

Hay-on-Wye is the place

where book lovers can spend days and days.

On a towpath alongside a canal.

A view across the canal.

The magnificent acer in the garden of Gliffaes -

... here together with friends.

Another fine specimen of the leafy variety  ...

... with turquoise berries! Quite spectacular.

A view from our hotel room window -

with lots of happy memories ...

... and looking forward to the next trip!
